For anyone wanting to try a challenging half or even full marathon then i would recommend this one. It was a tough multi terrain course, along towpaths, through wooded areas that climbed out of the Luxulyan Valley and lots and lots of HILLS!! Lovely scenic route though with fantastic views, streams and waterfalls.

Presentation Night Awards

Northampton Road Runners conducted their annual general meeting and presentation night at Moulton with 7 members of the club recognised for their achievements. The most improved runner was Mark Garrett, whose improvement over the 12 months was best illustrated by 5 progressive runs at the half marathon distance. The runners' runner award voted for by all members was shared between Club Chairman Alan Hackett and Secretary Jo Smith. The Chairman's trophy was won by club stalwart Bob Feasey for his continued contribution and support for the club. The Female Runner of the Year was Maree Jesson, who has had an excellent 12 months with notable successes in local races as well as the big Marathon stage. Andy Blaize was the Male Runner of the Year, following consistent performances across many distances throughout an estimated 35 races. The Committee trophy was awarded to Sally and Mark Garrett, new members to the club in 2006, in recognition of their contribution to the club at a sporting, social and organisational level.

Shakespeare Half

With the excitement of the London Marathon over, a single Northampton Road Runner was in action as Sue White competed in the Rotary Shakespeare Half Marathon. White had been disappointed with her performance in London, 7 days earlier and was determined to put that behind her saying "I need to prove it to myself". White was successful in laying her London "ghost to rest" with an excellent 1:47:01, putting her amongst the top quarter of the 1,709 strong field.

27th Flora London Marathon

Northampton Road Runners were well represented in the 27th Flora London Marathon, however roadside temperatures of 25 degrees centigrade for the hottest London race in history, put paid to ambitions of fast times. A slow start and the heat, prevented Andy Blaize from achieving his sub 3 hour target, but a debut 3 hours 2 minutes and 7 seconds was a respectable effort. The clubs' marathon specialist, Maree Jesson lined up on the women�s elite start and was less than 2 minutes outside her best in 3:14:31, a time which saw her placed 166th female, and ensures she will return to the elite start in 12 months. Good friends Mark Nightingale and Simon Tootell ran together for most of the 26.2 mile journey, though on this occasion it was Nightingale, the experienced marathon runner who finished the stronger in 3:26:45, with the debutant Tootell, home in 3:37:22. 67 year old veteran Mick Clarke shows no sign of slowing and broke his regular 4 hour target, with an excellent 3:58:01, giving him 22nd place in the over 65 category. A delighted Jo Faulkner handled the weather and was able to improve on her 2006 time by over 9 minutes, clocking 4:06:06. Previous London finishers Steve Morgan, Mick Bhogal, Patrick "Spike" Breydin and Dave Solomon navigated the course sensibly in the conditions with respective times of 4:29:11, 4:43:11, 5:16:17 and 5:25:02. Sue White had run a marathon before, but her 1st London saw her come home in 4:53:35. One of the performances of the day came from the ever smiling and popular Pauline Horne in the Ladies Veteran 55 group. Horne had trained to run a 5 hour race and was spot on finishing in 5:03:21.

Irchester series is a family affair

Northampton Road Runners were fully represented in each of the 3 distances of the 1^st leg of the Irchester Country Park Series that started on Sunday.

It was certainly a family affair for the Garretts, with mother Sally Garrett clocking a respectable 33.41 in the 5K distance.

In the 10K race, husband Mark “Morris Man” Garrett produced the performance of the day when 9^th with a time of 40.39, and son David Garrett had a fine run in 49.43 in what were tough conditions.

“Colonel” Tom Sullivan, seemingly an ever-present in these local races finished close behind with a time of 50.52.

In the 15K race, marathon bound Simon Tootell and Maree Jesson ran together for times of 72.48 and 72.49 respectively, commendable considering they had already ran laps of the course prior to the race in order to meet their training needs.

XC Report-Magic Morrow Shines @ East Haddon.

The latest cross country held on Sunday 14^th January 2007 and hosted by Team East Haddon, again highlighted the resurgence of Karen “Magic” Morrow, who was the 2^nd NRR lady home and back among the scorers for the 1^st time since February 2004. Karen’s running has taken a back seat while she has concentrated on other projects, but with another tilt at the London Marathon due in April, she clearly has regained her focus.

Karen said after the race, “I’ll soon be back to my best, I won’t stop until I’m once again the number one lady at the club. Bring it on.”

The ladies team was led home by Joanne Smith, who improved on her club 3^rd at Letchworth with a brave run from Jo Cummins completing the scorers.

The men’s team were led home by John Saw, who is returning to form after illness, followed by “Morris Man” Mark Garrett who secured his best cross country club finish in 2^nd place. Mark puts his improved form down to some of the training he gets from his 2^nd hobby, stating “It’s all the jumping around we do. I don’t suppose waving the handkerchiefs around contributes much, although the tight shorts help my glutes.”

Richard “The” House and Simon Toottel produced good runs to be 3^rd and 4^th respectively, with the club’s old guard of “Dangerous” Davie Whatton, Freddie Marriott and Gary Britten completing the scoring.

Bob Feasey “was also there” with Club President Alan Hackett left wondering what might have been, but for the late withdrawals of club stars, Gary McDaniels, Maree Jesson and Andy "I'll be back" Blaize.
