How To Be Safe When Out Running From RunningSafe
Runningsafe has been setup to help runners to be safe whilst they are out on the street running.
Following the tragic death of a Northampton Road Runner whist traning for the 2015 London Marathon Runningsafe was setup. The aim is to help runners be safe, and to help all road users be aware of all that is around them.
Runningsafe has a series of tips on its website www.runningsafe.co.uk which you can read to help you be safe whilst out running.
Here are 7 tips for when you are on a run:
- Run TOWARDS the traffic, even when on the pavement but especially if there is no pavement. Facing traffic means you can see what’s coming giving you extra vital seconds to react if you need to get out of the way.
- Don't assume that a driver or cyclist has seen you. Be prepared to take action.
- Some people act as if they have never seen a runner before and can't help but jeer - if you are subject to such behaviour, just ignore it and carry on running.
- Make sure your shoe laces are well fastened. You don't want to trip over on a loose lace.
- Use discretion when acknowledging strangers - if someone asks for the time or directions, be friendly, but try to keep moving while you shout the answer.
- Don't challenge cars to a race. If you and a car are both approaching an intersection, stop and let the car go first. (News flash: They're faster than you.)
- STAY ALERT – Drivers can be tired, on the phone, fiddling with the radio, drunk, in a bad mood – there are numerous reasons why a driver may be distracted and the last thing on their mind is looking out for runners. YOU HAVE TO LOOK OUT FOR THEM – and be prepared to take action!
